Aosta’s centre of obesity surgery
The centre, directed by Dr Umberto Parini, Director of General Surgery and the Surgery Department of Aosta Hospital, has a multi-disciplinary team for the selection, preliminary study, intervention indications and subsequent follow-up of obese patients.
The team consists of: surgeons, medical dieticians, anesthetists, endocrinologists, pneumologists, psychiatrists and psychologists.
Method of access
To gain access to our Centre, the person interested must, above all, book a first surgical check-up and a first dietetic check-up with our specialists.
The first check-ups are carried out either by the National Health Service (referral by the patient's doctor and payment of the health "ticket" at our structure), or either privately.
For the booking of check-ups at the public service structure, telephone the CUP (the Unified Booking Centre)--freephone number * 848 809090 , specifying that you desire access to the out-patient clinics that deal with obesity surgery.
For private check-ups, telephone number 0165 543285 for information.
The surgeon and dietician carry out an initial evaluation of the patient and give some indication of what interventive strategy to follow for obesity.
If surgery is indicated, the patient will be contacted by our Centre in order to:
- Participate in a psycho-educational group, held by the psychologist and dietician in which the relevant feeding arguments are confronted pre- and post-operation,
- Carry out a prelimary hospitalisation phase in order to confirm the situation; this involves a hospitalisation period lasting about 4 days, in which the patient is subjected to various hema-chemical and instrumental checks, as well as check-ups by all the team's specialists.
The hospitalisation phase for confirmation has the objective of studying the patient under all aspects, in such a way as to outline a complete clinical picture, on the basis of which the team evaluates possible complications and/or contra-indications, defines the suitability of the operation, and gives indications about the appropriate type of surgery.
If the patient is suitable, he or she is called again by our Centre to arrange hospitalisation, that usually lasts 6 - 10 days (it depends on the type of operation and the post-operative process).
It can be done either through the National Health Service or privately.
Subsequently the patient must undergo a series of surgical, dietetical and psychological check-up tests
The initial check-ups last 1 month , 3 months, 6 months and 12 months from operation, before the performance of hema-chemical and instrumental tests.
Check-up tests are booked at the Unified Booking Centre - CUP - on freephone number * 848 809090 .
Additionally the patient will be contacted in the post-operatory phase by our Centre to participate in one or more meetings of a group held by the psychologist and dietician in order to face up to the phase of changes of eating habits and life style, comparing their own experience with that of other people who have undergone the same treatment regime.
Surgical techniques
Unless there are indications to the contrary all obesity operations are performed at our Centre with the laparoscopic technique.
This does not require the cutting of the abdominal wall, although they are done by little holes of about 1 cm in the abdomen, through which the operators insert the telecamera and surgical instruments.
The laparoscopic technique has various advantages, amongst which is the more rapid recovery of the patient after the operation and a minor risk of complications.
Our Centre, moreover, is situated in a qualified Hospital, capable of giving appropriate assistance both in the pre-operatory confirmation phase and during the operation and post-operatory phase. In fact the structure has within it the intensive post-operatory therapy wards, intensive care, heart unit, dialysis, as well as advanced instumental diagnostic services: magnetic resonance, two spiral TACs, angiography, and radiocardiogram.
The operating theatre is endowed with the most modern laparoscopic equipment, including the The surgical system Da Vinci™.
Which operations?
Those who are proposed by our Centre for operations are diverse and are able to supply the most appropriate reply to the specific characteristics of the single person:
- Gastric pacing
- More restricted operation
- Gastric bypass
- malabsorbing operations
